Under the general supervision of the Manager-Perfusion Services and attending physician, the Perfusionist provides extracorporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary bypass and related perfusion activities during surgical procedures or any medical situation where it is necessary to support the patient’s cardiopulmonary function.


1. Provide consultation to the physician in the selection of the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used during extracorporeal circulation.


2. Selects perfusion related supplies required for the procedure, sets up, primes, tears down, and cleaning of the equipment.


3. Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used, as well as ensures the correct setup and tear down of the perfusion equipment, including disposable, non-disposable, sterile and non-sterile.


4. Monitors the altered circulatory process closely, taking appropriate action when abnormal situations arise and keeps the attending physician(s) informed.


5. Conducts extracorporeal circulation during cardiac surgery procedures.


6. Manages patient blood temperature while on extracorporeal circulation within the operating room.


7. Monitors and/or checks blood gases, glucose, electrolytes, and anticoagulation while on, immediately before, or after extracorporeal circulation within the operating room.


8. Ensures safe management of cardiopulmonary functions while patients are on extracorporeal support.


9. Administers pharmaceuticals and intravenous solutions under the supervision of attending cardiothoracic surgeon or anesthesiologist.


10. Transports patients our from originating entity on extracoporeal devices by ground transportation and may participate in the transport (mobile or fixed-wing) of patients supported by extrasorporeal devices to out side hospital.


11. Provide set-up, priming, and initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (EMCO) as well as troubleshooting ECMO circuit problems and assisting with in house transports when needed.


12. Provides, documents and/or serves as a resource for clinical perfusion care in connection with a variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures, including, but not limited to: cardiopulmonary bypass support, autotransfusion (for cardiothoracic related cases), adult extracorporeal membrane oxyenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VAD), and intra-aortic balloon pump procedures (IABP).


13. Assumes after-hour and weekend call on a rotational basis for the perfusion team.


14. Remains updated within the department by attending staff meetings, huddles, or reviewing minutes of such activities when not able to attend.


15. Assists with in-service educational programs for other medical staff when designated by the Manager-Perfusion Services.


16. Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of perfusion policies, standards, and procedures.


17. Participates in the evaluation and selection of new equipment.


18. Evaluates new technology released by industry to assess its effectiveness and/or improvements to patient care; instructs and mentors peers on the use of equipment and supplies.


19. May participate in or perform clinical perfusion research and stays abreast of current and developing advances in the field.


20. Assists with peer personnel training as needed.


21. Assists in the development of methods and procedures to improve departmental efficiency.


22. Performs quality control/preventative maintenance and related documentation.


23. Complies with Mercy Hospital Springfield and Mercy-wide policies and procedures.


24. Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate. Observes universal precautions consistently. Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance. Meets Health System attendance standards.


25. Performs other duties as assigned by department manager.


Education: Graduate of an accredited Perfusion education program.
Licensure: Licensed by the state of Missouri as a Clinical Perfusionist or Provisional Clinical Perfusionist.
Experience: Successful completion of an accredited perfusion education program and be eligible to take the ABCP board exams.
Certifications: Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) or become a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the ABCP within on year of hire. Maintain current CPR certification through the American Heart Association or acquire within the probationary period.
Other: 30 minute response rate when on call. Must pass a physical exam upon hire, prior to start date. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, biochemistry, hematology, cardiology, specialized medical, mechanical and electrical equipment, clinical and surgical procedures, as well as administrative policies and procedures. The ability to deal with high stress situations, work independently, have effective interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field and graduate of an accredited perfusion education program.
Preferred Licensure:
Preferred Experience: 3-5 years as as Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP), ECMO experience.
